Contract software engineer
Nov 2024 – Present

- Cut the time the app takes to open from over two minutes to about 1.6 seconds, after finding five separate causes.
- Fixed the slow lists. The cause was not the database, as assumed; once warm they load in about half a second.
- Closed several security gaps found in a backend review I started ahead of bringing more users on.
- Traced an upload failure after long idle periods to one library call, and shipped a fix with tests so a recurrence is caught.
- Built AI-written document descriptions and subject tagging on Amazon Bedrock, with a cap on the cost of each request.
- Maintain signed, notarised macOS and Windows releases through Bitbucket Pipelines.

Case studies
- 2 min → 1.6 s
Why the app took two minutes to start
Five separate causes, each found and fixed, with the result measured on the packaged production app.
- 1 root cause found
Uploads that failed after an hour idle
Uploads failed after the app sat idle. The cause was one library call that never refreshed its credentials.
